Huskies Gain 28-17 Football Win Over Northern State

St. Cloud, Minn. -- St. Cloud State (1-3, 1-2 NSIC) gained 556 yards in total offense enroute to a 28-17 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win over Northern State University, (0-4, 0-3  NSIC) Saturday night at Husky Stadium. The Huskies gained 298 yards on the ground, with 258 yards in the air.

Game Highlights….

**The Huskies gained 556 yards of total offense. The last time the Huskies gained over 500 yards was Oct. 29, 2005 when St. Cloud State gained 630 yards against Minnesota, Crookston. The school record for total offense in a game is 686 versus Nebraska-Omaha on Nov. 2, 2002.

**Sophomore running back Brandon Geiss (Shorewood, IL) rushed for a career high 188 yards on 23 carries. He averaged 8.2 yards per carry. It was his fifth career 100-yard game and second of the 2009 season.

**Junior running back Jack Machacek (Eagan) rushed for 89 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns. He averaged 8.1 yards per carry. The 89 yards was the second most of his career as he rushed for 94 yards against Minnesota, Crookston on Oct. 11, 2008. The two touchdowns also equaled his career high.

**Senior quarterback Mitch Watkins (Jerseyville, IL) threw for a personal best 258 yards. He  ended the night 21 of 28 for 258 yards and two touchdowns, while connecting on 13 straight passes to start the game.

**Junior wide receiver Tyler NuQuay (Ham Lake) who moved to the receiver position following the 2008 season from running back caught a career high eight passes for 133 yards and scored his second career touchdown as a Husky.

**Sophomore corner Joe Everson (Lakeville) collected his first collegiate interception as a Husky. He finished the game with four tackles and one pass break up.

**Senior linebacker Gyangelo Bradden (Minneapolis) led the Huskies with a career high nine tackles on the night.

**The win was the first for the Huskies in 2009 and ended a four game losing streak that dates back to the final game of the 2008 season.

Down 3-0 after one quarter of play, the Huskies were able to punch in the first of four scores on the evening, three seconds into the second quarter, when junior Jake Machacek (Eagan) scored from the one yard line to make it a 7-3 game.

St. Cloud State added another score before the end of the first half, as senior Mitch Watkins (Jerseyville, Ill.) connected with junior Tyler NuQuay (Ham Lake) for a 21-yard score.

The Wolves made things interesting to start the second half, scoring on a 31-yard touchdown pass to cut the Husky lead to 14-10.

The Huskies answered with another touchdown pass from Watkins, as he hit redshirt freshman Tyler Allery (Dunseith, N.D.) for a 16-yard score to go up 21-10.

Machacek then added a second one-yard touchdown jaunt to put an end to a seven play, 80-yard drive at the 8:14 mark in the fourth.

Northern State quickly answered, as Montrel Richardson scored on the third play of the ensuing drive with a 61-yard touchdown run to put the game back to a two possession game at 28-17.

The Huskies were able to grind out the game, as sophomore Brandon Geiss ran the ball 22 times for 191 yards in the game. Machacek ended the game with 89 yards and two scores on 11 carries.

NuQuay and junior Fred Williams (Milwaukee, Wis.) both tied for a game-high eight catches a piece.

Northern State was led by junior back Montrel Richardson who rushed for 174 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown. Trent DesLauriers led the Wolves in receiving with seven catches for 75 yards. Chris Hurd led all players with ten tackles on the night that included one quarterback sack and one tackle for loss.
