Doug Patterson - Co-Offensive Coordinator / Offensive Line

Doug Patterson

Doug Patterson joined the Husky staff as Co-Offensive Coordinator in 2007 and also coaches the offensive line.

Patterson had been the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Minot State University since the 2000 season. He also served as the recruiting and summer camp coordinator. During his stint at Minot State, he coached three first team All-Americans and 13 all-conference offensive linemen. His offense set numerous school records including marks for total offense, single season individual passing, single season individual receiving, and single season individual rushing. In addition, the Beavers set DAC 10 conference records for total offense, passing yards and passing touchdowns.

Patterson is familiar with Husky football as he served as a graduate assistant tight ends coach for SCSU during the 1999 season, Randy Hedberg's first year as head coach of the Huskies. Prior to coaching with the Huskies, Patterson was the offensive line coach at Bishop Ryan High School in Minot for seven seasons.

A native of Souris, ND, Patterson has a bachelor's degree in social science from Minot State. He was a four-year letterwinner and two-year starter on the offensive line at Minot State from 1988 to 1991, and played for Coach Hedberg for two seasons.

Doug, his wife Kristi, and their three children, Kade, Camden, and Keegan reside in Sauk Rapids.

Steve Grimit - Defensive Line Coach

 

GrimitSteveThe veteran of the Husky football coaching staff, Steve Grimit is in his 17th season with the SCSU staff as the defensive line coach. Grimit has helped establish SCSU as one of the nation's top Division II programs. 

Grimit has established a tradition of success for the defensive linemen at St. Cloud State. The Husky system supports aggressive defensive line play that has helped players realize their potential at the collegiate level.

He has coached 29 All-Conference defensive linemen, six All-Americans in Charlie Cosgrove, Ryan Kees, Cale Pulczinski, Troy Kluck, Jason Sell, and Brent Graunke, along with two conference MVPs in Cosgrove (2005) and Pulczinski (2008).

Prior to landing at St. Cloud State where he also coached the Husky wrestling team, Grimit coached at Western Illinois University and Valparaiso University. He wrestled and played football in college, qualified for the NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships and was a co-captain of his Western Illinois football team in 1985.

Grimit graduated from Western Illinois University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. Steve and his wife Kim have two children, Nicole and James.

Jim Louis - Defensive Coordinator

Jim LouisLouis officially joined the Husky coaching staff on July 1 and is a familiar name to Husky football as he played linebacker for the Huskies from 1993 to 1997.
       

A three-year starter, he earned All-North Central Conference recognition in 1996 as an Honorable Mention player and in 1997 as a Second Team honoree. He was also named to the 1996 and 1997 Academic All-North Central Conference teams. He ranked among the top five in Husky tackles during the 1995, 1996, and 1997 seasons. He was the second leading tackler for the Huskies in 1997 recording 94 that season. Louis currently ranks 14th on the St. Cloud State tackles chart with 236 during his career.
       

Louis joins the St. Cloud State coaching staff after three seasons as an assistant coach at Watburg College in Waverly, Iowa. At Wartburg, he was hired as the defensive line coach in 2005, and in 2006 was named the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Louis directed his Wartburg defense to the number one ranking in nearly every category in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC). In 2007, the Knights were ranked in the top 15 nationally in five defensive categories, including second in the nation in scoring defense.
       

Prior to coaching at Wartburg College, Louis spent five season as an assistant football coach and assistant track and field coach at Minot State University. At Minot, he was the defensive coordinator in 2003 and 2004, and also coached inside and outside linebackers and the defensive line. The 2002 Minot squad won the conference championship and advanced to the NAIA national playoffs. At both Wartburg and Minot, Louis coordinated a defense based on a sound run defense and an aggressive zone blitz package.
       

Louis also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant football coach at St. Cloud State from 1998 to 2000. His assignment included working with the linebackers and serving as an assistant strength and conditioning coordinator.
       

Louis earned an undergraduate degree in applied psychology and a master’s in sports management at St. Cloud State. He has taught in the physical education departments at both Wartburg and Minot State.

Ian Shoemaker - Co-Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach

Ian Shoemaker officially joined the Husky football coaching staff on July 1, 2008.
       

Shoemaker had been the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks and strength and conditioning coordinator at Baldwin Wallace College (OH) since 2006.  At Baldwin Wallace he designed and implemented a multiple spread no-huddle offense, supervised a diversified strength and conditioning program, and expanded recruiting efforts to Florida. In addition, he supervised the operation of the digital video editing system and recruiting database.
               

Other coaching stops for Shoemaker have included three seasons at Kenyon College (OH) where he was the assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, and strength and conditioning coordinator. His offensive squad broke 13 school and individual records. As a member of the coaching staff at Kenyon College he helped increase student-athlete numbers and minority athlete numbers.
       

Shoemaker also coached at Minot State University alongside Doug Patterson. Shoemaker was the pass game coordinator and worked with the quarterbacks and wide receivers. He was the offensive coordinator at Saint Mary College in Kansas where he assisted in the recruitment of the inaugural class for the start-up program. From 1997 to 1999 he was an offensive position assistant at Western Washington University and worked with running backs and tight ends.
              

In addition to coaching football, Shoemaker has been a head baseball coach at Minot State and Saint Mary College. He was also an assistant fastpitch coach at Western Washington.
               

His teaching experience has included stints as an instructor at Baldwin Wallace, Kenyon, and Minot State, and graduate instructor at Western Washington.  He has also made numerous guest speaking appearances.
               

A native of Graham, Washington, Shoemaker is a graduate of Grinnell College (IA), where he was a four-year starter in both football and baseball, and earned a degree in psychology.  He was the football Most Valuable Player and Offensive Back of the Year and set school records for home runs in a season and career in baseball.

Luke Bengston

Luke Bengston - Offensive Line

Luke Bengston moved from the Husky team roster to a role as a student assistant coach in 2008. Bengston was listed as a wide receiver on the 2007 Husky football team but was limited by injuries from a car accident prior to his arrival at SCSU. He transferred to St. Cloud State from Northwest Missouri State and is a 2004 graduate of Johnson High School in Urbandale, Iowa. At Johnson, he played football and basketball, and both teams qualified for the state tournament his senior season. He was an All-State and All-Conference football player. He was a three-year starter and All-Conference basketball player. Bengston is pursuing a physical education major with a health and coaching minor.
