WOMEN'S BASKETBALL; Huskies Lose Home Finale to Winona State, 84-75

St. Cloud, Minn. -- Katie Tacheny (Woodbury) poured in 26 points but it wasn't enough as St. Cloud State fell to visiting Winona State Univeristy, 84-75 Saturday evening at Halenbeck Hall.
Tacheny's effort was thwarted by Winona State's Jenny Steffen who led all players with 30 points and made a game high four three-point baskets.
St. Cloud State dropped to 19-8 overall and 12-8 in the NSIC and finish the regular season tied for sixth place with Wayne State. Winona State is 22-25 overall and 15-5 in the NSIC and finishes in second place. The Huskies will travel to MSU Moorhead for a first round NSIC/Sanford Health postseason tournament game on Wednesday, March 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Winona State will host Wayne State that same night in first round action.
Tacheny made six of 13 field goal attempts and 13 of 15 free throws to lead the Huskies. She also dished out five assists. Sophomore guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) added 21 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore center Rachel Booth (Minneapolis) also finished in double figures with 11 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Danielle Ellison (St. Paul) equaled her career high with eight rebounds and scored seven points.The Huskies shot 39.7 percent from the field and 24 of 28 free throw attempts.
Steffen shot 12 of 19 from the field and made four of eight three point attempts to lead the Warriors. Senior guard Molly Anderson had 15 points and ten assists, and made 11 of 12 free throw attempts. First year forward Michelle McDonald added 12 points, and junior guard Ana Wurtz had ten points. The Warriors shot 51.8 percent from the field in the game and made 24 of 24 free throw attempts.
The Huskies and Warriors played a solid first half with both teams shooting over 45 percent from the field and St. Cloud State had a 19-12 advantage on the boards, led by Danielle Ellison with eight rebounds.
Winona State jumped out to a 4-0 lead on jumpers by Jamie Majerowicz and Natalie Gigler. The Huskies answered with a 17-0 run sparked by the sophomore duo of Talisha Barlow and Rachel Booth. Barlow had 11 points in the run and Booth knocked down two three-point attempts, and the Huskies led 17-4 with 13:41 left in the half.
The Warriors closed to six points in the next two minutes with a 9-2 run. An Ellison layup put the Huskies ahead 21-13 midway through the half. The Husky lead increased to ten two times in the next minute and a half, as a Booth layup put SCSU up 25-15 at the 8:26 mark. Another run, this one by the Warriors, put the visiting team within three points of the Huskies. Winona State went on an 11-4 run with Steffen scoring seven of those points to close the gap to 29-26 with 4:56 remaining. The Huskies went up 34-26 on an Anna Cashman three with 2:51 on the clock. Two Jenny Steffen baskets later followed by a Bonnie Bjorke jumper and the Husky lead was down to three, 37-34. Ellison ended the half with a jumper at the buzzer to give SCSU a 39-34 half-time lead.
Katie Tacheny scored the first nine points of the second half for the Huskies including six free throws and the Husky lead increased to 38-38 at the 16:53 mark of the second frame. Baskets by Steffen, Molly Anderson, a three by Ana Wurtz and a layup plus one by Michelle McDonald gave the Warriors their second lead of the game, 50-48 at the 14:02 mark.
Talisha Barlow knotted the game 50-50 with 13:56 on the clock. An Anna Wurtz three gave the Warriors the lead that they would not relinquish. A three point basket by Cashman closed the gap to five points, 68-63 at the 8:00 minute mark, but Winona State answered and held leads of ten points and 12 points seven times in the remainder of the game.
The game was the final home contest for four St. Cloud State seniors. Senior guards Anna Cashman (Faribault), Krystal Scott (Rosemount), and Katie Tacheny (Woodbury), along with forward Danielle Ellison (St. Paul) were honored following the completion of the game.
