SCSU women top UMC, 84-59

Anna Cashman hit five threes on her way to a team leading 16 points as the Huskies bettered the Golden Eagles 84-59 to snap a two-game losing skid.

Crookston, Minn. – The St. Cloud State women’s basketball team entered today’s game needing a win after two tough losses last weekend.  Led by 16 points from Anna Cashman, (Faribault, Minn.) they got just that, with an 84-59 road win over Minnesota, Crookston this afternoon, Feb. 21.

Cashman lit up the scoreboard with her career high-tying five threes in 17 minutes of play.  She was 5-of-7 from behind the arc and added a 1-for-2 tally at the free throw line to cap off her night.

Five total Huskies scored in double figures, including Talisha Barlow (Little Canada, Minn.) and Katie Tacheny (Woodbury, Minn.) who each had 12, Aaryn Booker (Minneapolis, Minn.) with 11, and Rachel Booth with (Minneapolis) with 10.

The Huskies took 42 shots in the first half, connecting on better than 40% on their way to a 42-24 lead at the intermission.  Tacheny led the way with 10 points in the half and the Husky bench produced 20 first-half points to aid in the effort.

A three-pointer by Tacheny  with 9:20 to go in the first half gave the Huskies their first double-digit lead at 21-11, and another three from Tacheny with 2:19 left put SCSU ahead 20 at 40-20.

St. Cloud State used a 14-2 run over a 5:17 span to push their lead from five points at 8:07 to 19 at the 2:50 mark.   After going down 20, the Golden Eagles scored four straight points to cut into the Husky lead, but SCSU got part of it right back as the first half ended with two Tacheny free throws .

In the second half the Huskies went back up 20 at 46-26 early, and would lead by as much as 19 for the rest of the way.

Kyrstal Scott (Rosemount, Minn.) grabbed a career and game high nine rebounds as part of a season high 49 on the day for the Huskies. SCSU also held a huge advantage in points in the paint, out-scoring UMC 42-22 down low.

The Huskies improve to 19-6 on the season and 12-6 in the NSIC while UMC falls to 9-16 and 5-13 in conference play.  St. Cloud State will hit the road once more this season, when they travel to St. Paul on Feb. 25 for a 6:00 pm match-up with Concordia.

The Huskies then close the regular season on Feb. 28 at home against Winona State in a red out, in what should be an important battle for conference and regional tournament positioning.
