WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Booth Double-Double Leads Huskies to 63-54 Win Over Wayne State

Rachel Booth posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds as SCSU beat Wayne State 63-54,

Wayne, Neb. – Rachel Booth (Minneapolis) scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to pace the Huskies this evening (Jan. 30) as the St. Cloud State women’s basketball team won their third straight, besting the host Wayne State Wildcats 63-54.

St. Cloud State (17-2, 10-2) never trailed in the game, and stretched their lead to as much as 15 on two separate occasions over Wayne State (10-9, 7-5).  Booth scored 16 of her points in the first half as the Huskies raced out to their lead. 

St. Cloud State scored the first six points of the game as Booth, Katie Tacheny (Woodbury) and Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) each contributed a bucket to the Huskies led 6-0 with 16:48 left to play.   After Wayne State got on the board, Krystal Scott (Rosemount) hit a jumper in the paint to stretch the lead back to six at 8-2 at the 16:11 mark. 

The Wildcats then hit a three and jumper to get within one at 8-7 at the 13:54 mark, their closest margin of the game.  From their however SCSU went on an 11-0 run and held a 19-7 lead with 9:49 left to play after Anna Cashman (Faribault) made good on three consecutive free throw attempts. 

The Huskies would lead by as much as nine for the remainder of the half, and went up by their largest margin at 15 with 1:18 to go after Booth connected on a three-pointer.  Going into the locker rooms St. Cloud State held a 13 point lead at 39-26. 

After getting their lead back to 15 less than a minute into the second half, the Huskies saw the Wildcats begin to chip away.  Wayne State would get to within five after Laquisha Cook hit one of two free throws to make the score 48-43 in favor of the Huskies with 11:33 left to play. 

In the second half, the Wildcats were able to keep Booth in check as she scored just two points in the period.  Picking up the slack was Tacheny who led St. Cloud State with eight points in the period. 

After the margin got to five, the teams traded baskets and it was again a five-point spread at 50-45 with 10:35 left to play.  That would be as close as Wayne State would get, though, as St. Cloud State put together a 12-5 stretch that ran over eight minutes off the game clock and saw SCSU hold a 62-50 lead with just 2:24 to play.

The Huskies then ran out the clock on their way to the 63-54 win.  Along with Booth, Tacheny and Barlow each finished in double figures with 12 points apiece.  Cook led all scorers with 25 for the Wildcats. 

10 of Booth’s 12 boards came on the defensive end as St. Cloud State held Wayne State to just four second chance points.

The Huskies hold firm on sole possession of second place in the league standings with their 10-2 record.  A challenge will come tomorrow night, however, as they travel to take on Augustana who is right on St. Cloud State’s heels with an 8-3 conference record and alone in third place.  Augie is 15-4 overall and scored a 69-63 win over Concordia this evening.
