Huskies Post 73-54 NSIC Win Over Northern State

St. Cloud, Minn. –  St. Cloud State had an impressive first half of shooting enroute to a 73-54 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win over Northern State (SD) University Saturday night in Halenbeck Hall. The Huskies shot 60 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from three point range in the first half and finished the game with over 50 percent shooting in both categories.

The Huskies maintained their hold on second place in the NSIC standings and improved to 16-2 overall and 9-2 in the league. Northern State is 10-8 overall and 6-5 in the NSIC.

St. Cloud State was led in scoring by sophomore center Rachel Booth (Minneapolis) who scored a game high 17 points that included two three-point baskets and seven of 11 shooting from the floor. Senior guard Anna Cashman (Faribault) added 12 points as she connected on four of six three-point attempts and dished out six assists. Senior guard Katie Tacheny (Woodbury) knocked down nine points and added a game high seven assists and five steals. Sophomore guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) and senior forward Danielle Ellison (St. Paul) each had eight points for the Huskies. Ellison had a team high six rebounds. The Huskies shot 54.5 percent from the field and 52.9 percent from three-point range for the game.

Northern State was led by first year forward Mikayla Barondeau with 12 points. First year center Krista Rabenberg at six foot six inches tall, had nine points and six rebounds for the Wolves. Northern State shot 42.3 percent from the field in the game and had a 29-27 rebounding edge over the Huskies.

St. Cloud State’s Rachel Booth scored the first points of the game, a three-point basket and the Huskies never trailed in a game where they led by as many as 23 points late in the second half. The Huskies led 23-9 eight minutes into the game as Booth and Tacheny combined for 14 points, scoring seven each to open the game. A layup by Booth at the 5:12 mark put the Huskies up 33-17. St. Cloud State led 38-21 at the half.

Northern State closed the gap to 11 points at the 13:48 mark of the second half on a layup by Emily Becken, capping a 13-7 run to open the half. A 19-11 run by the Huskies put the home team up 64-43 at the 6:31 mark.

The Huskies are 8-2 at home this season and 5-0 on the road. St. Cloud State will play six of their remaining nine games on the road beginning next weekend with an NSIC series at Wayne State and Augustana College.
