Women's Basketball Posts 87-74 Win Over Mary

St. Cloud, Minn. – Five St. Cloud State players scored in double figures to lead the Huskies to an 87-74 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) women’s basketball win over the University of Mary Friday night at Halenbeck Hall.
St. Cloud State improved to 15-2 overall and 8-2 in the NSIC. The University of Mary dropped to 9-8 overall and 4-6 in the NSIC.
St. Cloud State senior guard Katie Tacheny (Woodbury) despite foul trouble finished the game with a team high 19 points that included ten of 11 shooting from the free throw line. She was whistled for three fouls early in the game. She has scored in double figures in 16 games this season. Sophomore guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) added 16 points for the Huskies and made seven of ten field goals. Senior forward Danielle Ellison (St. Paul) was eight of eight from the free throw line, scored 11 points and led the team in rebounding with six. Senior guard Krystal Scott (Rosemount) also had 11 points as did senior guard Anna Cashman (Faribault). Cashman made three of five three-point baskets. The Huskies shot 45.8 percent from the field.
The University of Mary was led in scoring by sophomore forward Rachel Zillmer from nearby Foley, Minn. Zillmer scored a team high 19 points and had a game high eight rebounds. Three Marauder players scored 11 points each, including Anna Skala, Abby Bratlien and Sonny Schulz. The Marauders shot 45.6 percent from the field but committed 26 turnovers.
St. Cloud State senior guard Katie Tacheny scored the first basket of the game and never trailed in the first half as the Huskies took a 44-27 lead into intermission. St. Cloud State spread out the scoring as three players scored nine points each in the first 20 minutes. Senior guards Krystal Scott and Anna Cashman, along with sophomore guard Talisha Barlow all had nine points. Cashman scored all nine of her points on three-point baskets and Scott had four steals. The Huskies led by as many as 22 points in the half and Mary cut into the lead late as the Marauders scored the final five points of the half. The Marauders were led in scoring by junior guard Sonny Schulz with six points. Anna Skala, Liz Sipma and Abby Bratlien all had five points each for the Marauders. Both teams shot well in the half with the Huskies shooting 46.9 percent and Mary 45.5 percent.
The Huskies scored the first six points of the second half and maintained a 20-point cushion for the first ten minutes, leading 70-50 at the 9:27 mark. Mary scored five straight points that included a basket and two free throws from Skala that started their comeback. Bratliedn scored on two free throws followed by another Skala jumper, a three-point basket by Marlee Finley, a Rachel Zillmer jumper and an Abby Reiter layup, and the Maruaders trailed 73-66 with 4:19 left in the game. Ten of the Huskies final 14 points were scored on free throws, including six of six from Danielle Ellison.
The Huskies will host Northern State at 6:00 p.m. Saturday night.
