Third Ranked Mavericks End Husky Win Streak, 67-60

St. Cloud, Minn. –  Third ranked Minnesota State University, Mankato prevailed in a highly touted matchup between the Mavericks and St. Cloud State University with a 67-60 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) women’s basketball win Saturday night at Halenbeck Hall.

The Mavericks improved to 16-0 overall and 9-0 in the NSIC. The loss brought an end to the Huskies seven game win streak. St. Cloud State is 14-2 overall and 7-2 in the NSIC.

Junior guard Tiffany Moe led Minnesota State University with 17 points as she made six of ten field goals and three of four three-point baskets. She also had six rebounds. Senior guards Heather Johnson dropped in 16 points and Joanne Noreen added 11 points. Senior forward Alex Andrews had a team high seven rebounds. The Mavericks shot 40 percent from three point range and overcame poor shooting in the first half to shoot 50 percent in the second half and 38.9 percent from the game.

St. Cloud State was led by senior guard Katie Tacheny (Woodbury) who scored a game high 19 points and a game high eight rebounds. She also had four assists and three steals, and made eight of eight free throw attempts. Tacheny has scored in double figures in all but one game this season. Sophomore guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) knocked down 15 points for the Huskies and senior guard Krystal Scott (Rosemount) also scored in double figures with 12 points and had seven rebounds. Like Tacheny, Barlow has scored in double figures in all but one game. The Huskies held a 37-35 rebounding edge in the game and shot 37.9 percent from the field. St. Cloud State made 13 of 15 free throw attempts for an 86.7 percent average.

The game was tied six times in the first half  and the largest lead was five points for the Huskies at 28-23 and again at 29-25, the half time score. With the game tied at 8-8 the Huskies took a 12-8 lead on two free throws by Tacheny and a jumper, but MSU responded and a three-point basket by Noreen put the Mavericks ahead 13-12. An Alex Andrews three-point basket at the 8:30 mark put MSU up 20-17. Tacheny made two free throws on two occasions and the Huskies took the lead at 21-20. Two Flecia Foster free throws gave the Mavericks their last lead of the half, 23-21, as the Huskies answered with a five points from senior forward Danielle Ellison (St. Paul), two Krystal Scott free throws and a free throw from sophomore post Rachel Booth (Minneapolis) to take a 29-25 half time lead.

A 10-4 run by the Mavericks to open the second half put MSU up 35-33 at the 16:21 mark. The run included three-point baskets from Noreen, Johnson, and Trauger.MSU kept coming at the Huskies with three point baskets as Trauger hit a three to give the visitor’s a 45-40 lead at the 12:41 mark. With five minutes remaining the Mavericks took another five point lead 57-52 on two free throws by Tiffany Moe. Twice in the next minute, the Huskies cut the score to three points, first on a jumper by Booth and again on a jumper by Scott to make it 59-56 at the 4:16 mark.  An old fashioned three-point play by Johnson , an Andrews jumper, and a Noreen layup put the Mavericks up 66-58 with 1:32 left in the game. The Huskies missed three three-point attempts in the final :21 seconds, and Minnesota State earned the 67-60 win.
