Huskies Post 76-70 Win at Bemidji State for Sixth Straight Win

Bemidji, Minn. – St. Cloud State senior guard Katie Tacheny (Woodbury) scored 23 points, making six of six free throw attempts in the final :23 seconds of the game to give the Huskies a 76-70 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win over Bemidji State Saturday night in Bemidji. The win was the sixth straight for SCSU and put the Huskies at 13-1 overall and 6-1 in the NSIC. Bemidji State dropped to 2-13 overall and 0-8 in league play.

Tacheny led all players with 23 points and made ten of ten free throw attempts, had four assists and four steals. Sophomore post Rachel Booth (Minneapolis) in her first start since an ankle injury equaled her career high with 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds. She also had two blocked shots. A third Husky, sophomore guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) also scored in double figures finishing the game with 14 points and a team high eight rebounds. The Huskies shot 40.6 percent from the field and 31.6 percent from three-point range.

Bemidji State was led by Colleen McKay with a 17 point, 11 rebound performance. Taylor Davis added 16 point and seven rebounds, and Sydney Epema finished the game with ten points, including three three-point baskets. The Beavers out rebounded the Huskies 47-38 and shot 39 percent from the field.

St. Cloud State jumped out to a 17-4 lead to open the game as Rachel Booth scored the first seven points of the game and had 11 points midway through the half. The Huskies pressured the Beavers early in the game and forced eight BSU turnovers in the first ten minutes of the game as St. Cloud State led 21-9 at the 9:59 mark. St. Cloud State also shot the ball well in the first ten minutes, connecting on 47.4 percent from the field and 66.7 percent (2 of 3) from three-point range. The Beavers went on a run of their own outscoring the Huskies 9-2 to draw to within five points, 23-18. Shortly after the Huskies increased the lead to ten points as Katie Tacheny scored five in a row to give SCSU a 30-20 lead. The home team fought back scoring eight straight points on a Colleen McKay basket, a traditional three point play from Samantha Baldwin and a Taylor Davis basket and the Beavers were in the game, trailing 30-28. Booth knocked down a jumper for the Huskies and Davis added two free throws for the Beavers to end the half with St. Cloud State leading 32-30. Booth and Tacheny finished the first half in double figure scoring as Booth led the way with 13 points and Tacheny with ten.

Bemidji State kept the fire going in the opening minutes of the second half as Davis scored to tie the game and McKay drained a three to give the Beavers their first lead of the game, 38-35. Another Davis basket and a three-point basket by Sydney Epema forced St. Cloud State to call a time out at the 17:29 mark with the Huskies trailing 34-40. Epema drained her second straight three and stretched the lead to 43-34. St. Cloud State answered with a 13-4 run as Tacheny drained a three, Talisha Barlow scored twice, Christine Steele scored three points and first year Becca Friestleban (Victoria) tied the game with a three at 47-47. Friestleban tied the game at 50-50 with another three and the Huskies went ahead on back to back baskets from Booth to lead 54-50. The two teams exchanged baskets until Tacheny nailed two free throws at 6:33 to put SCSU up 62-57. But in a game filled with runs, the Beavers made another comeback. This time McKay scored, Kiki Phillips made a basket and Davis hit two free throws to close to one point, 63-64. Davis scored again with just over a minute to play to draw to 68-69. Following an SCSU time out, Barlow drew a foul, made one of two free throws and the Husky lead was 70-68 with  :49 seconds left. Tacheny went to the line three times  in the final 23 seconds of the game, made six free throws and sealed the 76-70 road win for the Huskies.
