Women's Hoops Wins Fifth Straight

Duluth, Minn. – St. Cloud State sophomore guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) scored 20 points to lead the Huskies to a 75-61 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) road win at the University of Minnesota Duluth Friday night. The Huskies improved to 12-1 overall and 5-1 NSIC. Minnesota Duluth dropped to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in league play.

The Huskies had five players score in double figures including four starters, led by Barlow who also had a team high six rebounds. Senior guard Katie Tacheny  (Woodbury) had 12 points and three steals. Senior forward Danielle Ellison (St. Paul) knocked down 12 points and five rebounds to round out the starters in double figure scoring. Sophomore post Rachel Booth (Minneapolis) returning from injury dropped in ten points. First year Aaryn Booker (Minneapolis) added six points and five rebounds.

The University of Minnesota Duluth was led by sophomore Kelsey Hewitt with 20 points and nine rebounds. Junior Jheri Booker added a double double with 19 points and ten rebounds. While the Bulldogs committed 29 turnovers, they held the Huskies off the boards finishing the game with a 42-28 rebounding advantage. UMD shot 41 percent from the field.

A 9-0 run early in the game gave Minnesota Duluth a 15-7 lead. That was followed by a Husky run that included a three-point basket by Rachel Booth that closed the gap to 17-14 and forced the Bulldogs to call a time out at the 13:08 mark Back to back layups by  Talisha Barlow put the Huskies ahead 18-17 with 9:28 left in the half. The Huskies extended the lead to ten points, 31-21, on a Katie Tacheny layup near the four minute mark. St. Cloud State held a ten-point cushion, 35-25 at the half. The Huskies shot 53 percent from the field in the first half and 60 percent from three-point range while UMD shot 40 percent and 25 percent from three point range. Both teams suffered from turnovers with UMD holding a 16-14 edge in the category. Barlow led all scorers with ten points at the half.

Katie Tacheny opened the second half with a three-point basket to up the Huskies lead to 38-25 but the Bulldogs would come roaring back. After a Barlow basket gave the Huskies a 40-29 lead, UMD’s Kelsey Hewitt scored six points and a three-point basket by Jordanne Even forced the Huskies to call time out at 14:48 with a 44-41 lead.  A steal and layup by UMD’s Lindsay Miller brought the Bulldogs to within one point, 44-43 but a Booth basket put the Huskies up 46-43 with 14:10 on the clock. Four minutes later after back to back baskets by Danielle Ellison and Krystal Scott, the Husky lead was back to ten, 53-43. The Huskies garnered an even bigger lead, 60-45 at the 6:17 mark following a Booth basket.

The Huskies have won five straight and will play at Bemidji State tomorrow. The Beavers fell to Concordia, St. Paul 85-71 tonight.
