Women's Hoops Posts 67-58 Win Over Concordia St. Paul

St. Cloud, Minn.-- The St. Cloud State women's basketball team won a hard fought Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) contest 67-58 over Concordia University, St. Paul to open the New Year. The Huskies improved to 11-1 overall and 4-1 in the NSIC. Concordia, St. Paul dropped to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC.

St. Cloud State sophomore guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) scored a game high 24 points to lead the Huskies. She connected on nine of 17 shooting from the field and also had four assists. Senior guard Katie Tacheny (Woodbury) dropped in 17 points on five of ten shooting and dished our four assists to go with five rebounds. First year post Christina Steele (Apple Valley) scored ten points and pulled down a career high seven rebounds. Steele, along with sophomore post Marlayna Graff (Harris) filled in for the injured Rachel Booth. Graff, who started in place of Booth, finished the game with four points and five rebounds. First year forward Aaryn Booker (Minneapolis) came away with a team high eight rebounds. The Huskies shot 41 percent from the field and had a slight rebounding edge 43-42.

Concordia University, St. Paul was led by senior forward Candace Olstad with 14 points and seven rebounds.  Three players scored 12 points each. Junior guard Kali Olstad had 12 and made four three point field goals. Junio guard Jamie Jones and junior forward Shandrell Duncan had 12 pointsl. Duncan also had a game high nine rboudns.  Four Golden Bears had seven rebounds each. Joining Candace Olstad with seven boards were junior center Gillian Bjerke, sophomore guard Zoraa Quoie, and Jones. The Golden Bears had a poor shooting percentage in the first half, shooting 26.7 percent from the field. They shot better in the second half and finished the game shooting 34.9 percent.

St. Cloud State opened the game with baskets from senior guard Krystal Scott (Rosemount) and Barlow to take an early 4-0 lead. The Golden Bears went up by three, 7-4 at the 15:08 mark on two free throws from Quoie. A three-point basket from Barlow tied the game at 7-7 but Concordia, St. Paul extended the leage to 14-9 on a Duncan jumper with just under 14 minutes to play. St. Cloud State worked its way back to a 17-14 lead when four different players scored. Concordia closed to one point on the next basket at the 9:44 mark. Back to back Barlow jumpers put the Huskies up by five and the home team would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. the Huskies led 33-23 at the half.

In the second half, St. Cloud State extended its lead to 12 points twice in the early going, but the Golden Bears improved their shooting. The Huskies led 37-25 at the 18:03 mark and Concordia, St. Paul went on a 10-2 run that included five points from Candace Olstad and a three from Kali Olstad and the Bears were only down 37-35 at the 16:17 mark. A Tacheny basket and back to back three's by senior guard Anna Cashman (Faribault) put the Huskies up by six two minutes later. The Husky lead increased to 11 midway through the second half. The Golden Bears continued to press the Huskies and trailed 56-51 with 5:55 left in the game. This time the Huskies answered with free throws from Tacheny, a Graff layup and five points from Barlow
