Huskies Gain 94-68 NSIC Win Over Minnesota, Crookston

St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State used balanced scoring as all five starters scored in double figures to give the Huskies a 94-68 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) women’s basketball win over Minnesota, Crookston Saturday night at Halenbeck Hall. The Huskies improved to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the NSIC. Minnesota, Crookston dropped to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the league.
St. Cloud State was led by senior guard Katie Tacheny (Woodbury) with 17 points, seven assists, five steals, and zero turnovers in 29 minutes of play. Sophomore post Rachel Booth (Minneapolis) and sophomore guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) each scored 15 points. Booth was seven of 11 from the field and pulled down seven rebounds, while Barlow was six of eight from the field and two of two from three point range. Senior forward Danielle Ellison (St. Paul) and senior guard Krystal Scott (Rosemount) each scored 12 points. A season high for Ellison, she shot five of six from the field and had six rebounds. Scott also had six assists.
The Huskies shot 51.5 percent from the field on the night and made 50 percent of their three point attempts. St. Cloud State also held a 41-33 rebounding advantage. Minnesota, Crookston , after shooting only 29.6 percent in the first half, improved their second half shooting to finish at 37.9 percent.
The Golden Eagles had four starters score in double figures, led by sophomore Jamie Zelinsky with 17 points. Megan Eul, Bri Zabel and Diana Taddy, all scored ten points each. Taddy had a game high eight rebounds.
A 20-7 run in the final nine minutes of the first half put St. Cloud State in the drivers seat 44-30 at the intermission. The Golden Eagles kept it close in the first ten minutes, never allowing the Huskies a larger lead than eight points. With 9:31 left in the half UMC’s Diana Taddy made two free throws and the St. Cloud State lead was cut to 24-23. An old fashioned three point play, a basket followed by a free throw, from Rachel Booth started the Husky run. Five different players scored in the run with Booth dropping in nine points.
The Huskies shot 53.1 percent from the field in the first half including four of six shooting from three point range. Booth and Barlow each had 11 points in the first half and the Huskies collected seven steals and scored 17 points off turnovers. The Golden Eagles were hindered by 29.6 percent shooting and ten turnovers, but held the rebounding edge 19-17.
St. Cloud State forced several Golden Eagle turnovers in the early going of the second half , went on a 22-9 run and led 66-39 at the 13:26 mark. The Huskies continued to increase the lead and for the third time this season scored 94 or more points in a game. Eleven Huskies put points on the board and all 12 players that dressed had at least one rebound.
St. Cloud State will take a break from NSIC action and play two non-conference games in the upcoming week. The Huskies will host Dakota State on Dec. 22 and Minot State on Dec. 30.
