13th Ranked Dragons End Husky Win Streak

St. Cloud, Minn. – Minnesota Stat University Moorhead held off a late run by St. Cloud State University to post a 67-65 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win Friday night at Halenbeck Hall. The 13th ranked Dragons improve to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the NSIC, while the Huskies suffered their first loss of the season, are 7-1 overall, 2-1 in league play.

The Dragons featured four players who scored in double figures led by first year forward Angie Jetvig with 18 points. Junior guard Krista Opheim added 13 points and nine assists. Junior forward Alison Nash-Gerlach dropped in 12 points and junior center Meghan Rettke finished with 10 points and ten rebounds.

St. Cloud State sophomore guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) led all scorers with a game high and career high 25 points. Senior guard Katie Tacheny (Woodbury) scored 19 points and was three of four from three-point range. Senior forward Danielle Ellison added ten points and a ream high seven rebounds.
MSU Moorhead shot 59.1 percent from the field and outrebounded the Huskies 33-27.

The Dragons made four of six three points attempts and shot 57.9 percent fromt eh free throw line. The Huskies forced 21 MSUM turnovers. St. Cloud State shot 34.5 percent in the first half and improved during the second half, shooting 41.4 percent. SCSU made seven of 17 three point attempts and shot 70 percent from the free throw line.

The Huskies and Dragons exchanged baskets in the early going until the 4:45 mark of the first half when MSUM’s Jetvig hit a jumper that put the Dragons up 22-21. Jetvig outscored the Huskies 8-0 in the final four minutes to give the visitor’s a 30-26 half time lead.

St. Cloud State pulled to within one points, 37-38 at the 13:40 mark of the second half when Tacheny converted on two free throws, but Jetvig answered for the Dragons rattling off ten straight points including a three-point basket that gave MSUM a ten point lead at the 11:24 mark.  Back to back three-point baskets by Opheim and Betsy Dickson stretched the Dragons lead to 11 points 55-44 with 8:28 left in the game.

The Huskies did not give up, as Tacheny and Barlow combined to score the Huskies next ten points and trailed MSU Moorhead 61-59 with 2:33 left in the game. The Dragons went up by six on baskets from Opheim and Rettke with 1:23 left. The Huskies answered again as Barlow and Danielle Ellison each made a free throw. Ellison converted on two more free throws and the Huskies trailed 65-63 with :32 seconds on the clock.

In the final 30 seconds Opheim made one of two free throws to give MSUM a 66-63 lead. With 20 seconds on the clock, St. Cloud State called a time out to set up the offense. The Huskies had two three-point attempts by senior guard Anna Cashman miss the mark. St. Cloud State got the ball back with ten seconds left and Ellison laid one in and the score was 66-65 in favor of the Dragons. The Huskies fouled and Katie Walden made one of two free throw attempts with four seconds left. The Huskies had one last chance but were not able to score and lost their first game of the season.

St. Cloud State will host Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday night.
