NSIC Basketball: SCSU 78, Upper Iowa 67
Women's Basketball Sweeps NSIC Weekend

Fayette, Iowa – The St. Cloud State women’s basketball team made it a weekend sweep in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference basketball with a 78-67 win over the University of Upper Iowa Saturday night at Dorman Gymnasium on the Upper Iowa campus. On Friday night, the Huskies defeated Winona State 73-70 in SCSU’s first conference outing of the season, and the first in their new league.
St. Cloud State improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC. Upper Iowa dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC.
St. Cloud State was led in scoring by senior guard Katie Tacheny (Woodbury) with a game high 22 points including ten of 12 shooting from the free throw line. Three other Huskies scored in double figures as sophomore post Rachel Booth (Minneapolis) scored 15 points and had two blocked shots. Senior guard Krystal Scott (Rosemount) and sophomore guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) each added 13 points and five rebounds. The Huskies shot 44.8 percent from the field.
Upper Iowa was led by Lyndsay Westgaard with 18 points and eight rebounds. Lana Otting and Andrea Downs each had 12 points and Melissa Fitz 11 points. The Peacocks made six three-point baskets and shot 44.2 percent from the field.
An 18-5 spurt to close out the first half gave St. Cloud State a 36-29 half time lead. Upper Iowa led 24-18 near the seven minute mark after a Melissa Fitz three point basket. Two free throws by Katie Tacheny followed by a basket underneath brought the Huskies to within two 24-22. The Huskies outscored the Peacocks 12-3 down the stretch as Tacheny tied the game on two free throws at the 3:09 mark and on the Huskies next possession put SCSU up 26-28 with a layup off her own steal.
The Huskies used balanced scoring in the first half as Tacheny, Krystal Scott and Talisha Barlow all had eight points. St. Cloud State shot 45.5 percent from the field and 75 percent from the charity stripe. In addition, the Huskies scored 14 points off turnovers in the half. Upper Iowa was led by first year guard Melissa Fitz with 11 points. The Peacocks shot 57 percent from three point range, making four of seven attempts from long range.
St. Cloud State opened the second half with an 11-4 run and increased the lead to 17 twice. Upper Iowa challenged the Huskies in the second half but the closest the Peacocks would get was nine points.
