Huskies Are 5-0 Following 67-54 Win Over Nebraska-Omaha

Omaha, Nebraska – The St. Cloud State women’s basketball team improved to 5-0 overall with a 67-54 win over the University of Nebraska-Omaha in the UNO Thanksgiving Classic Saturday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks dropped to 1-2 overall.
The Huskies were led in scoring by sophomore guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) and senior guard Anna Cashman (Faribault) with 17 points each. A season high, Cashman made three of six three point baskets and was eight of eight from the free throw line, and Barlow added three assists and two steals. Senior guard Katie Tacheny (Woodbury) also scored in double figures with 13 points, made seven of eight attempts from the free throw line and had three assists. Sophomore post Rachel Booth (Minneapolis) had eight points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots in the winning effort.
St. Cloud State made 20 of 23 free throw attempts and shot 43.1 percent from the field. The Huskies had a 37-29 rebounding advantage and led 27-21 at half time. First year forward Aaryn Booker (Minneapolis) and senior forward Danielle Ellison (St. Paul) each had six rebounds in the game.
The University of Nebraska-Omaha was led by LaToya Wright with 12 points and Alyssa Green with nine points. Amanda Brodsack added eight points and six rebounds for the Mavericks who shot 37.5 percent from the field.
St. Cloud State took a 6-4 lead on two Anna Cashman free throws six minutes into the game and kept a lead over the Mavericks for the remainder of the game. The Huskies led 27-21 at half time as UNO closed the gap to six points with a Mary Brown jumper at the buzzer.
The Mavericks closed the gap to five points twice in the early going of the second half on a Kamillia Brown three-point basket at the 19:21 mark and a minute later on an Ashley Nelson jumper for a 31-26 Husky lead. An 8-0 Husky run that included two Rachel Booth baskets and baskets from Talisha Barlow and Aaryn Booker gave the Huskies a 39-26 lead at 12:38 of the second half.
With the Huskies in the lead 52-40 and 6:23 left in the game, the Mavericks made a run at the visiting team, scoring seven straight points of which five were scored by Alyssa Green. That little run pulled the Mavericks to 52-47 with 3:21 left in the game. St. Cloud State responded with a Talisha Barlow steal and layup, and then scored the final 13 points on free throws going to the line 14 times in the final 2:25 of the game. Anna Cashman made six straight free throws and Katie Tacheny four straight to account for the Huskies final ten points.
At 5-0 overall, this is the best start for the Huskies since starting the 2005-06 season with a 17-0 record. St. Cloud State will open the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) race next weekend on the road, playing at Winona State on Friday and Upper Iowa on Saturday.
