St. Cloud, Minn. – The 2009-10 St. Cloud State University men’s and women’s basketball seasons officially get underway Thursday afternoon, Oct. 15. That’s when the Husky coaching staffs and players hit the court in preparation for the new season.
The Husky men will practice from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., followed by the women from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
Here’s a quick look at the coach and team for 2009-10:
St. Cloud State head coach Kevin Schlagel (St. Cloud State) opens his 13th season as head coach of the Huskies. The winningest coach in Husky men’s basketball, Schlagel has compiled a 237-112 overall record. Since becoming the head coach in 1997, Schlagel’s teams have made six NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and won three conference championships. St. Cloud State has been ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II by The Sporting News. The Huskies return four starters in 2009-10 led by senior center Matt Schneck (Whitefish Bay, WI). Schneck was recently named to The Sporting News Preseason Honorable Mention All-American team. He was named to the NSIC All-Tournament team in 2009 and averaged 14.0 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game. Junior guard Taylor Witt (Morris) earned All-NSIC First Team Honors, was named the MVP of the NSIC tournament, and was named to the NABC All-District team. Last year he averaged 15.9 points per game and led the team with 161 assists. St. Cloud State will open the season in the Radisson Suite St. Cloud Hoopster Classic to be held Nov. 20-21 in Halenbeck Hall. The Huskies will tip-off against cross town rival St. John’s University at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20. On Saturday, Nov. 21, the Huskies will play Michigan Tech at 8:00 p.m.
