All-District Witt

Kansas City, Mo. – St. Cloud State sophomore men’s basketball player Taylor Witt was recently named second team All-District by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

The Morris, Minn. native represents the Huskies as one of 11 members named to the first or second team, and is one of eight total players from the NSIC that litter the All-Central District roster.  The accolades have started to mount up this post season for the super sophomore as he has already been named first team All-NSIC, as well as NSIC Tournament MVP after leading the Huskies to the tournament title

Witt closed the season at the Huskies’ leader in scoring and assists, averaging 15.9 points and 5.2 assists per game.  He also nailed a team-high 52 three-pointers, and was third among regulars, connecting for over 36% from downtown.  Witt was the only player to start in every game for the Huskies throughout the season and led SCSU with 966 minutes played for an average of 31.2 per game.

In the NSIC ranks, his scoring average of 15.9 was good enough for seventh place, and was the best among sophomores.  In conference games only, he finished tied for the league assist title with 115, and in all games, finished second with an average of 5.19 per game.

Witt scored 27 points in the season opener and would go on to score 20 or more points in 10 games during the season, including two games were he hit his career high of 30.  In only six of the Huskies 31 games was he held to under 10 points, and 16 times he finished as the Huskies leading scorer.  Four times he dished out a career high nine assists in a game and in 10 games he tallied seven or more.

On Feb. 2, he was named NSIC Player-of-the-Week for the first time in his career after he led the Huskies to a pair of big road wins while averaging 21.0 points and 7.5 assists in the two games.  However the his defining moment of the season, came in the semifinals and finals of the NSIC Sanford/Health Men’s Basketball Tournament as he led his team, first past the tournament host, and then past the preseason favorite, on their way to the title

Witt scored 59 points in the final two games while spending all but one minute on the floor, including all 40 minutes of the championship game.  He went 19-of-23 from the free throw line for the weekend which included an 11-for-13 mark in the title game.

Along with their NSIC Tournament Championship, Witt led the Huskies to a 22-9 record and their most wins since the 2002-03 season.  SCSU finished 14-6 and in third place in the NSIC regular season, before sweeping through the conference playoffs and into the NCAA tournament.
