Husky Men Take Sole Possession of First Place in NSIC with 68-46 Win Over Concordia, St. Paul

St. Cloud, Minn. -- St. Cloud State junior center Matt Schneck scored 24 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead the Huskies to a 68-46 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win over Concordia University, St. Paul Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall. The game featured the two remaining unbeatens in the league and the Huskies now have sole possesion of first place in the league standings. With the win, St. Cloud State improved to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the NSIC. Concordia, St. Paul dropped to 6-6 overall and 4-1 in the NSIC.

Schneck recorded his fourth double double of the season and 11th of his career. The 24 points and 14 rebounds were both game highs and were one point and one rebound short of his collegiate career highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds. He made nine of 13 shots from the field and was six of nine from the free throw line. First year guard Brett Putz (Forest City, IA) enjoyed a career high 18 point and six rebound performance. Putz made seven of ten field goal attempts and was four of five from three point range. Sophomore forward Jesse Fisher (Pequot Lakes) notched a career high seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Taylor Witt (Morris) has eight assists. The Huskies shot 43.1 percent from the field and out rebounded the Golden Bears, 46-34.

Concordia, St. Paul was led by junior guard Sammy Ricks with 16 points and five rebounds. Four Golden Bears had five rebounds in the game including Matt Hackl, Craig Heiman and Thomas Bassett. The Golden Bears were victims of poor shooting as the visitor's shot 29.2 percent in the first half and finished the game at 32.3 percent. CSP made two of 22 three point field goal attempts and did not have an offensive rebound in the first half.

Concordia, St. Paul's Thomas Bassett scored the first point of the game on a free throw. St. Cloud State's Matt Schneck opened the Husky scoring with a dunk to take a 2-1 lead and the home team never looked back. Schneck had a double double in the first half with 13 points and ten rebounds. Putz had 11 of his career high 18 points in the first stanza as the Huskies led 36-16 at the half.

St. Cloud State continued to control the tempo of the game in the second half and led by as many as 37 points.The Huskies will hit the road in the NSIC next weekend traveling to Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State.
