Fisher helps Huskies past SMU 82-58 Schneck leads with 17 points

St. Cloud, Minn. – The highlight of the night was a court length heave by Jesse Fisher (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) that hit nothing but net just before the first half buzzer that put the Huskies up 24 heading into the break.  The St. Cloud State men’s basketball team would stay ahead by at least that margin for the remainder of the game as they cruised to the 82-58 victory over visiting St. Mary’s University this evening, Dec. 30.

The Huskies improved to 9-2 on the season while St. Mary’s fell to 2-7.

The court length shot was the first three-pointer of Fisher’s career, who had his best night of the season finishing with 13 points, including 4-of-4 from the charity stripe, six rebounds, and four blocks.  Teammate Matt Schneck (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) scored a game high 17 points, including 13 in the first half while playing only 10 minutes.

Brett Putz (Forest City, Iowa) and Josh Ortmann (Buffalo, Minn.) eached added 10 to round out the double-digit scorers.

The Husky defense set the tone all night keeping the Cardinals shooting near 40% for the entire game.  The SMU offensive attack struggled even more from behind the arc where they sank just two baskets and shot just 15% for the game.

The Husky D forced the Cardinals into 25 turnovers which turned into 21 SCSU points.  At the break, SCSU held a 16-to-0 advantage in points off turnovers.

A dunk by Schneck (his second of the game) at the 9:41 mark of the first half put SCSU up 11 at 25-14, and their lead would stay in double digits for the remainder of the game.  The dunk was part of a 18-2 Husky run over 6:36 that stretched their lead from four points to 20 points.

Every player in uniform played at least 11 minutes and 11 different players found the basket.  For the fourth straight game and fifth time in the last six games the SCSU offense has put up over than 80 points.

Winners of six straight, the Huskies will take their 4-0 NSIC record back into Halenbeck Hall this Saturday, Jan. 3, for a 4:00 pm tilt with Conference co-leader Concordia University.  The winner of Saturday’s game will be the last unbeaten team in the NSIC.

Last season the two teams split on the season, with each squad winning on its home court.  SCSU won the first contest 75-57 in Halenbeck Hall on Dec. 13, 2007, with CU returning the favor just a few weeks later, winning 61-57 in the Gangelhoff Center on Dec. on Dec. 30, 2007.

At last check, the Golden Bears were tied in overtime with St. Thomas.
