Huskies Run Away with 120-68 Win Over Dakota State

St. Cloud, Minn. –  St. Cloud State set a single game school record with 21 three-point field goals in a 120-68 non-conference men’s basketball win over Dakota State University (SD) on Saturday night at Halenbeck Hall.

With the win, St. Cloud State improved to 8-2 overall. Dakota State is 5-8 overall. The game marked the end of finals week for the Huskies who return to the hardcourt on Dec. 30 for a non-conference tilt against St. Mary’s University at 6:00 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.

All Huskies in uniform scored in tonight’s game, led by a trio of players with 17 points each. Junior center Matt Schneck (Whitefish Bay, WI) and sophomore guards Josh Ortmann (Buffalo) and Taylor Witt (Morris) all had 17 points. Witt and Ortmann each made five three-point baskets and Witt dished out eight assists. First year guard Brett Putz (Forest City, Iowa) scored his collegiate high 14 points and added four three-point baskets. Junior guard Spencer Bartz (Hinckley) and sophomore forward Jesse Fisher (Pequot Lakes) each had 12 points and Bartz knocked down four three-point baskets. First year guard Theo Rothstein (St. Michael) rounded out the Huskies in double figure scoring with ten points. Sophomore forward Andrew Bernstetter (St. Joseph) equaled his career high with a game high ten rebounds. The Huskies shot 52.4 percent from the field , 48.8 percent from beyond the arc, and tallied a season high 32 assists. St. Cloud State made 21 of 43 three-point field goals, eclipsing the old record of 15 set three times, with the most recent on Jan. 4, 2007 against the University of North Dakota.

Dakota State had three players score in double figures, led by sophomore guard Jason DeZeeuw and junior forward Alvin Gunter with 11 points each. Junior forward Brandon Cole dropped in ten points and sophomore center Bryce Snyder had a team high nine rebounds. The Trojans shot 39.7 percent from the field and were forced into 24 turnovers.

St. Cloud State looked sharp in the opening minutes of the game. Having not played in week, the Huskies made their first three field goal attempts of the game to jump out to a 7-0 lead and continued the offensive pressure to stretch the lead to 22-6 six minutes in. Dakota State scored their first points at the 17:19 mark, a three-point basket by sophomore guard Bryce Kreutzfeldt. The Huskies shot nearly 60 percent from the field and beyond the arc in the first ten minutes of the game. By half –time the Huskies had a 54.3 percent field goal percentage and had made 11 of 21 three point field goal attempts. St. Cloud State scored a season high 61 first half points to take a 61-28 lead into the intermission. Taylor Witt led the Huskies in first half scoring with 14 points and junior center Matt Schneck had 12 points. Sophomore forward Andrew Bernstetter led all players with eight rebounds. Dakota State shot 32.4 percent from the field in the first half and were led in scoring by Kreutzfeldt with eight points.

Dakota State scored a quick six points to start the second half and the Huskies called a timeout less than a minute in with a 61-34 lead. Nine minutes into the second half, first year guard Brett Putz nailed a three-point basket and in the process broke the SCSU team record for most three point baskets made in a single game. The Huskies would finish the game with a school record 21 three-point field goals.

The 120 points scored by the Huskies fell four points short of the school record 124 points set three times with the most recent against the University of North Dakota on Feb. 8, 1997. The last time SCSU scored 124 points in Halenbeck Hall was during the 1990-91 season against Macalester College.
