MEN’S BASKETBALL: Huskies Power Past Dragons In Second Half, Win 92-73

St. Cloud, Minn. – After trailing by as much as 11 in the first half, the St. Cloud State men’s basketball team closed the period on a 27-9 run, and outscored visiting Minnesota State University Moorhead 40-28 in the second half to win 92-73 this evening (Dec. 12) and improve to 3-0 on the conference season.
The visiting Dragons came out and shot better that 65% from the field in the first half and opened up an 11 point lead after a Xavier Reed jumper in the lane made the score 36-25 in favor of MSUM with 8:43 left to play in the opening frame.
After the MSU Moorhead bucket, SCSU head coach Kevin Schlagel called a time out to calm his team down, and out of the break the Huskies began to chip away. SCSU got to within two at 36-38 at the 5:34 mark, but MSUM went right back up by five after a Dragon three made it 41-36 MSUM, with 5:24 left to play.
From there the Husky defense stiffened up and did not allow a MSU Moorhead field goal for the rest of the half. Andrew Bernstetter (St. Joseph, Minn.) hit a three of his own at 4:35 to tie it at 41-41, and Brett Putz (Forest City, Iowa) hit a jumper in the paint at 4:18 to give SCSU a lead they would not relinquish. SCSU went into the break leading 52-45.
The Huskies scored their first four points of the second half to take their first double-digit lead at 56-45 with 18:29 left to play. SCSU would gradually add their lead throughout the half and at 5:55 Matt Schneck (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) hit a free throw to cap a three point play and put SCSU up 20 at 77-57.
The Huskies would lead by as much at 22 in the game at 92-70 before it ended with the 92-73 final. Schenck continued his strong play this season with his third double-double, finishing with 20 points and a season high 11 rebounds. Taylor Witt (Morris, Minn.) also added another impressive game on the season as he topped the 20 points for the second time this year with a game high 21 points. The current NSIC player of the week, Bernstetter, also scored in double-figures for the third straight game with 13.
Brett Carmichael (Elk River, Minn.) tied an SCSU record with his six steals on the evening, becoming the seventh player to accomplish the feat.
The Huskies shot 56.7% for the game, compared to 55.1% for the Dragons. In the second half as SCSU pulled away, they outshot MSUM 51.7%-to-44.0%. The Huskies out rebounded the Dragons 34 -24 for the contest and held a 46-28 advantage in points in the paint.
SCSU improves to 6-2 on the season and 3-0 in the NSIC while MSUM falls to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Northern Sun. The Huskies return to Halenbeck Hall tomorrow evening (Dec. 13), again at 8:00 pm, to host Minnesota, Crookston who lost this evening, 50-48 to Concordia, on a shot with 4.8 seconds left. UMC enters at 2-7 and 0-3 in the NSIC.
Last season in Halenbeck Hall, SCSU scored a 89-67 win over the Golden Eagles. SCSU has never lost to UMC.
