Huskies Drop First Game of Season, 91-86 to Humboldt State

Chico, California -- The St. Cloud State men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, 91-86 to Humboldt State University at the Carl's Jr. 49th Annual Mac Martinc Tournament Friday night at Chico State.

Humboldt State pulled away from the Huskies midway throught the first half when Humboldt State's Krenk-Babcocks layup put the Lumberjacks up 14-11 at the 10:31 mark. The Lumberjacks increased the lead and led 33-28 at the half.

The Huskies cut into the Humboldt State lead and tied the game at 53-53 on a three-point basket by junior guard Mahmoud Abdelfattah (Chicago, ILL) at the 11-minute mark of the second half. A 15-4 run  that included five points by Will Petty put the Lumberjacks up by 11 points at the 7:21 mark. The Huskies closed to within four points three times in the final three minutes but were not able to overcome the Lumberjacks.

St. Cloud State sophomore guard Taylor Witt (Morris) led all players with 19 points and added five assists. Junior guard Spencer Bartz (Hinckley) scored a career high 18 points and made five of ten three-point baskets.  Junior center Matt Schneck (Whitefish Bay, WI) added 11 points and six rebounds, and sophomore forward Andrew Bernstetter (Holdingford) had nine points and equaled his career high with ten rebounds.

The Huskies shot 44.8 percent from the field and made 11 three-point field goals.

Humboldt State had five players score in double figures led by Kevin Atkins with 15 points. Krenk-Babcock, Zac Tiedman and Will Petty all scored 14 points each, and Ernie Spada added 13 points. Jameson Figgatt scored eight points and ten rebounds.

Humboldt State started the season with two losses to Fort Lewis College and Southwest Minnesota State, and have won three straight games for a 5-2 record. The Huskies are 3-1 overall and will play CSU, Chico State Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. central time.
