Saturday, November 22, 2008
With a team high 13 points, senior Craig Coenen led SCSU to their third striaght win over St. John's 85-59. |
Collegeville, Minn. – The St. Cloud State men’s basketball team hit the road for the first time this season, but the short road trip to nearby St. John’s University fit the Huskies just fine as they came away with the 85-59 win against their nearby rivals the Johnnies this evening, Nov. 22.
The Husky tri-captains led the way this evening as Craig Coenen (Kaukauna, Wis.) and Brett Carmichael (Elk River, Minn.) each recorded a team high 13 points and Matt Schneck (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) tabbed his second double-double in as many games with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
After leading 44-30 at the intermission, the Huskies opened up to as much as a 30 point advantage in the second half. A high paced game throughout, the Huskies put up 70 field goals on the evening while shooting better than 45% from the floor and 84% from the free throw line. SCSU also held a big advantage on the boards, out-rebounding SJU 46-27.
Andrew Bernstetter (St. Joseph, Minn.) opened the scoring with a jumper less than 30 seconds in, and Josh Ortmann (Bufallo, Minn.) put the Huskies up 5-0 with a three-pointer on the next possession.
Another Ortmann three at the 13:46 mark put SCSU ahead 10 points and 20-10, but the Johnnies would battle back to within a bucket after a Chris Schwartz three whittled the lead down to just 20-18 at 12:34.
SCSU responded however, by scoring the next six points, before a 12-0 run late in the first half gave the Huskies their biggest lead of the period at 17 points. The 12-point run spanned 4:20 and was capped by a Taylor Witt (Morris, Minn.) lay-up off a steal of a Johnnie inbound pass to put SCSU ahead 44-27 with just 1:06 left before the break.
The Huskies continued to pad their lead in the second half, and led by as much at 30 points in the period. Every Husky in uniform saw the court and nine different players found the basket. In addition to Carmichael, Coenen and Schneck, Ortmann finished with 12 points and Witt pitched in 11 to finish in double figures.
Rookie Brett Putz (Forest City, Iowa) scored his first points, as he netted nine while playing 17 minutes. Schwartz led the way for the Johnnies with a game high 19 points.
With the win SCSU improves to 3-0 on the season as well as 3-0 in their last three against the Johnnies. SJU falls to 0-2 on the season.
After the Thanksgiving holiday, the Huskies will be out west for the Carl’s Jr. Mac Martin Tournament hosted by California State University, Chico (also known as Chico State). SCSU will open with Humboldt State on Nov. 28 at 7:30 CT, and a day later play tourney host Chico State at 9:30 CT (Nov. 29).
