St. Cloud, Minn. – Matt Schneck (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) recorded his first double-double if the season and the St. Cloud State men’s basketball team improved to 2-0 after their 78-66 win over the Wayne State Wildcats in today’s (Nov. 16) final game of the 2008 Radisson Suite Hotel Hoopster Classic.
Unlike a day ago, the Classic hosts found themselves trailing early on, and the Huskies did not take their first lead until there were less than five minutes remaining in the first half. However, as was the case last night, the Huskies put together a late run – 11-2 over a 4:10 span – and put the game on ice with a 13 point lead at 76-63 with just 2:54 left to play.
Schneck scored 10 second half points, but more impressive were his six boards in the period, all on the defensive end, as time after time the Huskies were able to stop the Wildcat attack.
SCSU held Wayne State to 31 second half points on 46% shooting from the field, and during one stretch limited WSC just a single jumper in the lane over a five minute span as the Huskies ran their lead to as much as 16.
With 12:45 to go in the second half SCSU held the advantage at 60-44, but a Wildcat three-pointer at 12:19 began the last gasp effort for Wayne State to get back in the ball game. The Wildcats were able to chip away at the lead until it was as little as four at 7:04 (65-61), but that was as close as it would get as the Huskies put it away from there.
St. Cloud State shot 61% as they pulled away in the second half.
In the Huskies final run to close the game, last night’s star Taylor Witt (Morris, Minn.) took over and scored six of the Huskies 11 point during the stretch. Witt finished in double figures for the second straight night with 12 points.
Schneck tallied 24 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double, with 14 if his points coming in the first half while the Huskies came back from a 28-23 deficit at 5:16 to hold a 40-35 lead heading in the intermission.
Also finishing in double figures was Brett Carmichael (Elk River, Minn.) who scored 10 points while playing a team high 33 minutes.
With the win SCSU runs through the Hoopster Classic unscathed for a second straight year, and are 6-2 all-time in Hoopster Classic games, having now won four straight. At 2-0 the Huskies will make the short bus trip to Collegeville next Saturday (Nov. 22) for their annual meeting with Saint John’s University. Last season the Huskies scored and 82-56 win over the Johnnies in Halenbeck Hall, with guess who leading the way. It should be fun to watch as always as tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
