Bernstetter leads Huskies past UMC.

Andrew Bernstetter scored a team high 14 points, hitting double figures for a career best fourth straight game, as SCSU improved to 4-0 in the NSIC with thier 91-54 win over Minnesota, Crookston.

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State used a season high 59 second half points as they cruised to the 91-54 win over the University of Minnesota, Crookston and 4-0 record in the NSIC.

A balanced scoring attack from the Huskies saw Andrew Bernstetter (St. Joseph, Minn.) lead the way with 14 points, followed by Taylor Witt (Morris, Minn.) and Theo Rothstein (St. Michael, Minn.) with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Included in the effort, was every SCSU player in uniform scoring at least three points, with Rothstein’s 10 marking the first time he has hit double-digits.  Bernstetter meanwhile, extended his personal best streak to four consecutive games with 10+ points.

SCSU held a 32-23 halftime lead, and opened the second stanza on a 13-1 over a 5:10 span en route to their 59 point second half.  The 59 points is a new season high for a half, bettering the old mark of 58 that the Huskies put up in the second half against Humboldt State.

The Huskies shot better than 60% (20-33) from the field in the second period, including 46% (6-13) from three-point range.  Rothstein and fellow first year Brett Putz (Forest City, Iowa) each hit some big threes in the second half to aid the Husky effort.

On the boards, SCSU held the slight advantage at 34-to-29, but where the difference was made was in the turnover battle.  SCSU turned the ball over just six times compared to 22 for UMC, which turned into a 29-to-7 Husky advantage in points off turnovers.  In the second half alone the Huskies held a 12-to-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

SCSU improves to 7-2 on the season and is 4-0 in NSIC, marking the first such record in league play since the 2002-03 campaign.  Minnesota, Crookston falls to 2-8 on the season and remains winless in NSIC play at 0-4.  UMC has dropped five straight on the season, and fell for the 15th consecutive time to SCSU.

The Huskies return to Halenbeck Hall on Saturday, Dec. 20 for the lone game of the week in a non-conference tilt with Dakota State (S.D.) at 8:00 pm.  The Huskies will then close non-conference play in Halenbeck Hall on Dec. 30 for a 6:00 pm game with St. Mary’s (Minn.), and will reopen NSIC play after the Holiday break against Concordia at 4:00 pm on January 3rd, in a contest that will display the last two unbeaten teams in Conference play.
