Men's Basketball Wins in Overtime, 99-97

Josh Ortmann scores career high 30 points

  

Winona, Minn. -- A layup by senior center Matt Schneck (Whitefish Bay, WI) at the buzzer in overtime gave St. Cloud State University a 99-97 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over the defending national champion Winona State Friday night at McGown Gymnasium on the WSU campus. A loose ball retrieved by sophomore guard Josh Ortmann (Buffalo) set up the assist for the winning basket. Ortmann, by the way scored a career high 30 points in the game.

All five starters for both teams scored in double figures led by Ortmann with 30 that included eight of 12 shooting from the field, five three-point field goals, and eight of ten free throws. His previous high was 13 points. Sophomore forward Andrew Bernstetter (Holdingford) notched his second double double of the season with 18 points and ten rebounds (equals his career high), and threw in five assists. Schneck threw in 16 points and senior forward Brett Carmichael (Elk River) and sophomore guard Taylor Witt (Morris) each had 14 points. Witt also dished out a career high nine assists.

St. Cloud State shot 50 percent from the field and 57.9 percent from three-point range. The Huskies made 11 three-point  field goals. The Huskies had a slim rebounding edge 40-39 in the game.

Winona State was led by senior guard Travis Whipple with 27 points. He scored 22 of those points in the second half, including nine overtime points. He was six of eight from three-point range. David Johnson scored 17 points. Joel Armstrong and Curtel Robinson each scored 14 points for the Warriors. Ben Fischer nearly had a triple double, scoring ten points, ten assists and nine rebounds.

The Warriors shot 47.3 percent from the field and 39.3 percent from three point range. WSU made 11 three-point baskets.

Winona State overcame a 20 point second half lead by the Huskies and senior guard Travis Whipple sent the game into overtime with a half court shot at the buzzer. The Huskies had opened the second half with a 12-2 run to take a 54-40 lead. The Husky lead reached 20, 67-47 with 11 minutes left in the second half as the Huskies spread out their scoring. Winona State followed with a 13-2 run of their own that included five points from Travis Whipple. With 1:28 left in the game, Winona State took its first lead of the second half on a Joel Armstrong layup. The Huskies made eight of eight free throws in the final minute of regulation and Ortmann made two of those free throws with :05 seconds on the clock.

The Huskies and Warriors played an even first half with the Huskies taking a 41-38 lead into the intermission. Ortmann scored 18 first half points including the first six points for the Huskies. Both teams had five point leads during the first half.

The game was tied nine times and featured ten lead changes.

St. Cloud State is 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC and will play at Upper Iowa on Saturday night. Winona State is 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC.
