St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State University baseball coach Pat Dolan has announced that Kalvin Johnson (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny H.S.) will attend the University and play baseball for the Huskies beginning in the fall of 2009. Johnson is a transfer from the University of Northern Iowa, which recently dropped its intercollegiate baseball program.
A 6-3, 200-pound first baseman, Johnson batted .275 for UNI during the recent 2009 season. He carded 12 runs, 22 hits and seven doubles for the Panthers in 27 games this spring.
A 2006 draft pick of the Tampa Bay Rays (37th round), Johnson earned First-Team All-Region honors as a freshman at Iowa Western Community College. In 2006, Johnson batted .352 with 58 hits, nine doubles, three home runs and 31 RBIs at IWCC.
Of note, Dolan also played baseball at Iowa Western Community College and he still owns the team record there for most career triples with 14 and career walks with 60 from 1997 to 1998.
As a prep player, Johnson earned First Team All-State and All-District notice at Ankeny High School. He also received All-Conference honors at Ankeny and set a team record for home runs with 15. He is the son of Nick Johnson and Shelly McKinney.
"Kalvin (Johnson) will be an outstanding addition to our roster in 2010," Dolan said. "He's had collegiate experience at Division I Northern Iowa and earned All-Region honors with a top junior college program at Iowa Western. His experience and talent should allow him to make an immediate impact on our team and in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference."
The Huskies posted a 36-18 overall record and a 15-13 record in the highly competitive NSIC in 2009. SCSU's 36 victories set a new team record for most wins in a season, and it also marked the team’s debut in the highly competitive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
