St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State University coach Pat Dolan has announced that Ryan Schwenke, a resident of Sigourney, Iowa and a graduate of Sigourney High School, plans to transfer to the University and play baseball for the Huskies beginning in the fall of 2009.
Schwenke (6-4, 190-pounds) is a transfer from the University of Northern Iowa, which recently dropped its baseball program. He played two seasons of baseball at Iowa Central Community College, where he earned All-Region first team notice in 2007 and All-Region second team honors in 2008 as a right-handed pitcher.
"Ryan will be a major addition to our roster in 2010. He was a proven closer at Iowa Central, which is a very solid junior college program. We look to have Ryan and our other UNI transfer, Bryant Koval, as our two main relief pitchers next spring," Dolan said. “A pitcher with Ryan’s talent and experience at the collegiate level will certainly help strengthen our pitching staff.”
As a prep player, Schwenke lettered for four years at Sigourney High School. He earned first team All-Conference notice as a junior and senior, and also gained second team All-District status as a senior. A talented all-around athlete, Schwenke also lettered in football, basketball and golf at Sigourney High School. In football, Schwenke received All-State recognition as a prep athlete.
He is the son of Eric and Melody Schwenke of Sigourney, Iowa.
The Huskies posted a 36-18 overall record and a 15-13 record in the highly competitive NSIC in 2009. SCSU's 36 victories set a new team record for most wins in a season, and it also marked the team’s debut in the highly competitive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
