Juror’s statement, April 11, 2012
This exhibition is an extraordinary example of the high caliber of artwork coming out of the studios of St. Cloud State University’s art department. One of the challenges of being a juror is coming into the situation cold, not knowing anything about the artists or the body of works they have created in the past, their artistic strategies or concerns. But perhaps that is for the best—the material and conceptual strengths of each of the works are ultimately unmistakable and together led me to make my selections based on the accumulations of positives rather than negatives. Taking a look around the gallery, it is clear that the artists here have considered what the lessons of art history and contemporary art world trends have to offer their own ground breaking artistic practices. Abstraction, minimalism, conceptualism, expressionism, realism, surrealism—it is all here. But what is also here, and what all of the artists who submitted work this year clearly have, is the passion and drive to create work that breaks through that inner monologue of questioning and problem solving, to fully committed participation in a larger cultural dialogue and the palpable desire to find their place in it.
Thank you very much for the privilege in participating this year, and congratulations to all of the participating artists.
