St. Cloud State University Art Department’s Kiehle Gallery will present an exhibition of mixed media works by artists Andrew Nordin, Jonathan Gomez Whitney and Mike Strand from early January to early February, 2009. The show which is entitled “BOOMERANG: Three alumni artists”will present new mixed media sculpture and painting, video, installation and performance art as well as a collaborative work.
The group writes:
“In 1994, Mike Strand, Jonathan Gomez Whitney and Andrew Nordin collaborated on an exhibition project titled “Hopscotch”. The title referenced the child’s game, in part because one of the large site-specific collaborative sculptures had a physical resemblance to the grid of hopscotch, and also because of the allusion to play and chance; two things that resonated through the artwork in the exhibition. Since that time, Mike, Jon, and Andy all moved their separate ways. Recent conversations have sparked renewed interest in another collaborative project between the artists, one which would help to add dialogue to the convergence of their paths.
The focus of the work in the exhibition hinges on the formal and conceptual similarities and differences between the three artists, a tension and familiarity that exists between the paths the three have taken since being students at SCSU.”
The show will run from January 7 – February 6, 2009. There will be a closing reception and artist talk on Wednesday, February 4 between 3-5 pm in the Kiehle Gallery, Kiehle Visual Arts Center, St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minnesota.
