St. Cloud State University Art Department’s Kiehle Gallery kicks off its season of exhibitions with paintings by Christian Nielsen from late August through most of September. The show entitled “Paintings”will present a range of the artist’s recent works. Art critic Sean Smuda writes:
“Christian Nielsen’s paintings exist in the optic pleasure zone between literal and abstract expression. Their imperfectly repeating patterns and three-dimensional colors are familiar, yet alien. They subtly psychedelicize the windowpane geometries of Malevich and color interactions of Albers with an op-art emphasis on contrast. The scale ranges from the intimate, almost LP cover-size of 12”x12” to 40”x40”, portrait-size work which is suitable for meditation and rapture without nod.”
The show will run from August 27 – September 26, 2008. There will be an opening reception and artist talk on Wednesday, September 17 between 3-5 pm in the Kiehle Gallery, Kiehle Visual Arts Center, St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minnesota.
