Math Enrichment Tutor

Service Position Summary: Math Enrichment Tutors will be intensively trained to work one-on-one and/or in small groups with 4th-8th grade students who are not proficient in math. The member will use prescribed mathematics interventions and will conduct regular progress monitoring and assessments to ensure each student is on track toward proficiency in math. In addition the member will participate in AmeriCorps programming including engaging volunteers and personal and professional development training.

In 2008-2009, we are partnering with the St. Cloud Area School District. Math Enrichment Tutors will serve in one of five schools in the St. Cloud Area School District including Discovery, Madison, Oak Hill, or Talahi Elementary Schools or North Junior High School.

Member Commitment & Requirements

As a Math Enrichment Tutor, you will be asked to make a commitment to serve for 11 months from August 18, 2008 - July 18, 2008. Full time members serve a minimum of 1700 service hours which averages 40 hours per week. Part time members serve a minimum of 900 service hours which averages 20 hours per week.

Minimum qualifications:
The member must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must meet AmeriCorps eligibility criteria:
    • 17 years of age or older (no upper age limit!)
    • United States citizen, national, or legal permanent resident
    • Be in the process of obtaining or have obtained a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must meet Math Corps Program eligibility criteria:
    • Complete a math proficiency test
    • Have a satisfactory response to a criminal background check

  • Prefer:
    • College coursework, higher education degree, or experience working with children
    • College coursework, higher education degree, or experience working with mathematics

Essential Functions:
The member must be able to perform the following essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations. Reasonable accommodations provided upon request.

  • Attend and actively participate in Member Orientation, Math Institute, ongoing training and required Math Corps sponsored events (i.e. Swearing-In Ceremony, National AmeriCorps Week, etc.)
  • Effectively communicate and build positive relationships with individuals and groups of varied backgrounds, abilities, educational levels, etc.
  • Work in cooperation with Master Coach, Internal Coach and classroom teacher to identify students who qualify to receive Math Corps tutoring services
  • Develop and maintain a weekly tutoring schedule to allow for approximately 15 – 20 students to receive the minimum required number of minutes (anticipated at 60-90 minutes) of one-on-one and/or small group Math Corps tutoring each week
  • Conduct one-on-one and/or small group tutoring sessions using prescribed mathematics interventions to help students practice their math skills
  • Communicate with the Master Coach, Internal Coach and classroom teachers regarding student schedules and interventions & progress, and be open to constructive feedback based on observations
  • Assess students’ progress using regular progress monitoring & benchmarking
  • Record students’ weekly progress utilizing the provided database
  • Review students’ data to gauge the effectiveness of the mathematics intervention being used and determine if a change in intervention is necessary
  • Compose and submit quarterly reports on progress towards performance measure goals
