SCSU Academic Advising Handbook
Academic Advising at SCSU
SCSU believes that all students are entitled to excellent academic advising. Such advising will not only assist students with course planning for general education and major and minor programs, but also encourage intellectual development and career planning. These ideas are reflected in the university’s core values for the advising program.
Advising is one of the most effective mechanisms for building personal contact between a student and the university. Effective, personal advising increases the likelihood that a student will be successful and graduate.
Core Values
- Advising is a form of teaching, which means that faculty are well qualified to do it effectively.
- Students deserve dependable, accurate, respectful, honest, friendly and professional service from advisors.
- Advisors help students develop a perception of themselves and their relationship to the future – advisors become mentors.
- Advisors encourage self-reliance by helping students make informed decisions, set realistic goals, and develop thinking, learning and life management skills to meet present and future needs.
- Advisors respect the rights of students to keep information about them private.
- Advisors involve others, where appropriate, in the advising process. For many advisors, this will include referrals to Career Services to encourage early and active career planning.
Student Responsibility in the Advising Relationship
- Students must be active partners in the advising process.
- Students are responsible for making and keeping advising appointments.
- Students should come to advising sessions prepared to discuss their plans, ask questions, and work with the advisor in formulating goals and strategies for meeting those goals.
- Students are ultimately responsible for meeting the graduation requirements.
