General Education at SCSU
The general education curriculum is the liberal arts portion of your degree. This distinguishes a university degree from a career training program. It encourages broad educational experiences and provides the opportunity for students to explore their interests. Equaling about one-third of the total credits required for the baccalaureate degree, it provides for the development of transferable skills which apply to all career choices.
SCSU is in the process of moving to a new general education curriculum. That new curriculum will be forthcoming during the 2009-10 academic year and will go into effect for fall semester 2010. During the transitional period, students may choose between the current SCSU general education curriculum and a temporary bridge version of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC).
- Students who begin their studies at SCSU prior to fall semester 2010 may choose either the current SCSU general education curriculum or the MnTC.
- Beginning with students admitted for the 2009 summer session, Degree Audit Reports (DARS) will be prepared using the MnTC for analysis of general education. Students who choose to follow the SCSU general education curriculum can contact the Office of Records and Registration to have their DARS reflect the change.
- Students who begin their studies at SCSU in fall 2010 or after must use the new general education curriculum.
- All students will still have to fulfill all University requirements, such as a lab, three diversity classes including one racial issues and PESS 122.
