FACILITIES CONSTRUCTION STATUS REPORT August 28, 2008

51 Building (Former Business Building)

  • The building was renovated during the 2007-2008 academic year.
  • The $1.5 million project was initiated to replace and improve an obsolete mechanical system.
  • In addition, it will also bring the building up to code for fire protection.
  • The building now houses the departments of English, Ethnic Studies, and Political Science.

Riverview

  • The roof, cupola and some exterior trim work was completed previously.
  • Riverview is in need of repair and improvement to meet current safety, accessibility, and academic needs.
  • The exterior walls, windows and doors, and the interior, is now under renovation.
  • Construction in the $4.5 million project will also improve energy efficiency.
  • Riverview is the only building on campus on the National Register of Historic Sites so the project will pay particular attention to preservation of the building’s historic elements.
  • When completed in the summer of 2009, the Department of Communication Studies will move to the building.
  • The construction contract was awarded April 1, 2008 and construction began in May.

Engineering & Computer Center roof

  • Roof replacement of a substantial portion of the building.
  • This project will prevent roof leaks and reduce energy use.
  • $433,635 was appropriated in the 2008 legislative session.
  • Project is scheduled to be complete October 31, 2008.

Boiler Plant

  • One of three central heating boilers is being rebuilt.
  • Bids were awarded in August, 2008.
  • This $970,000 project was funded in the 2008 legislative session.
  • The project will return the boiler to service and improve energy efficiency.

Parking Ramp & Public Safety Facility

  • The public safety facility is complete and moved in the week of July 22.
  • The parking ramp is nearly complete and opened August 25, 2008.
  • The $9 million facility provides about 500 stalls (200 student overnight parking and 300 for daily parking) and an office facility for Public Safety.

Robert H. Wick Science Building Addition

  • A $15 million, 36,000 square foot addition to the Robert H. Wick Science Building is being constructed west of the present facility.
  • The addition will house Chemistry and Biology labs and support spaces.
  • Construction is expected to be completed in November, 2008.
  • Final equipment installation during the fall term will anticipate opening for the spring 2009 academic term.
  • The project includes fire alarm and fire suppression (sprinkling) in the existing Wick Science Building.
  • The planetarium projector was replaced in the fall of 2007 as part of this project.

Brown Hall

  • The entire 78,000 square foot building is to be renovated. Renovation will make code, accessibility and functional improvements to meet current standards.
  • The renovated building will house Nursing (moving from an off-campus leased space), Communication Sciences and Disorders (from the Education Building), Continuing Studies (currently in leased space in Shoemaker), Physics labs, and Printing Services.
  • Construction funding of $15 million was provided in the 2008 legislative session; this project could start as early as January, 2009, and should be complete by the summer of 2010.

National Hockey Center Addition

  • An appropriation of $6.5 million was made in the 2008 legislative session to design, construct, furnish, and equip an addition to the National Hockey Center.
  • The addition, along with some renovation, is intended to improve spectator access and experience, building operating facilities, training and locker room facilities for on-ice participants, and increase flexibility of use.
  • Final parameters of the project are now being set, including expected fundraising goals to enhance the project.
  • An architect and engineer will be selected for the project in late summer of 2008.

Integrated Science and Engineering Laboratory Facility (ISELF)

  • Planning funds of $900,000 were appropriated in the 2008 legislative session.
  • The approved pre-design describes a more than $40 million, 100,000 square foot science research and teaching facility located at 8th Street and 2nd Avenue on the site of the 801 Building.
  • Architect and engineer selection was completed in the summer of 2008 by the State Designer Selection Board and detailed design work will begin in August.
  • Funding for construction will be requested in the 2010 legislative session.
