Mission Statement
Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport Science are means of education through knowledge, activities, and experiences. The Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport Science is committed to assisting students in their pursuit of knowledge and career placement, preparing them to be responsible members of society, encouraging them to discover and appreciate the diversity of our society, and relating effectively the importance of the physical aspect in relation to overall well being.
The Department’s mission is to be steadily and positively effective in all aspects of our professions. As its first priority, the Department is committed to excellence in teaching; fulfilling this commitment by offering courses reflecting the most current information in its respective fields, by expanding knowledge through basic and applied research, by encouraging open interaction between students and faculty, by providing timely academic and career guidance, by maintaining proper accreditation, and by assisting in career placement of its graduates. The Department is further committed to excellence in scholarly and creative activity, encouraging faculty to contribute to and be familiar with the expanding knowledge bases of their respective fields while keeping abreast of developments in their general areas of study. Such activity should enrich the Department’s teaching mission as well as make a contribution to the creation and dissemination of knowledge. Finally, the Department is committed to excellence in service to its broad range of constituencies: its students, and community of professionals and scholars, the College of Education, the University, and the State of Minnesota.
