The Chemistry Department was awarded the inaugural 2002 College
of Science and Engineering Dean's Outstanding Department Award.
The criteria for the award are: collegiality, contribution
to student professional development, contribution to community
building, department scholarship and teaching. For more information

Chemistry Department Accomplishments from Fall 2001-Fall
2002
Grants / Research:
- We had a total of 59 students doing research in the past year
on original research projects; this includes 17 High School students
through the Scientific Discovery Program.
- 21 grants submitted totaling $1,139,538.00 were submitted
- 14 of the grants were funded for a total of $546,392.00
- Four grants remain in the reviewing process for a total of $482,000
- 13 papers submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals
or proceedings
- 10 abstracts published
- 15 professional talks
- Reviewed 15 papers as peer reviewers for several chemistry journals
- Reviewed three grant proposals as peer reviewers
- Reviewed five books
- Invited moderator to two professional conferences
- Recipient of the 2002 COSE Faculty Research Award
- 18 student presentations at the SCSU Student Research Colloquium;
this includes two talks and 16 posters.
- Nine student presentations at the Summer Research Poster Session

- Four student presentations at American Chemical Society meetings
- Served on four Masters Thesis Evaluation Committees

- Flinn Workshop for High School Teachers (hosted by the SCSU Chemistry

October 25-26; there are over 50 participants registered.
Community Service / Professional Development
- Presented chemistry demonstrations show for the Horizons workshop
for Women in Science
- Presented Forensics for Kids workshop for Horizons workshop
- Presented chemistry demonstrations show for the Mathematics workshop
- Presented chemistry demonstration show for Earth Day Expo
- Filled our "Kids in Chemistry" program for the fifth
consecutive year
- Led the SCSU Chemistry Club to its first ever National ACS award
- Had a SCSU booth at the chemistry day workshop at the University
of Minnesota
- Presented two chemistry magic shows for the St. Cloud community
- Presented three chemistry demonstrations shows for local Boy Scout
troops

- Established a Biochemistry major
