Standards of Animal Care
In its care and usage of laboratory animals, St. Cloud State University is guided by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC).
AAALAC International is a private, nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs. For more information, visit the AAALAC Web site: http://www.aaalac.org/index.cfm.
The university’s Institutional Animal Care and Usage Committee (IACUC) meets on the first Friday of each month to discuss animal care and usage procedures and to ensure that all involved are knowledgeable about the AAALAC guidelines. Therefore, protocol forms are due in the Dean’s Office 10 days before the first Friday of each month (in order to be circulated and reviewed prior to the monthly meeting).
The IACUC is headed by Professor David DeGroote, dean of the College of Science and Engineering. Members of the committee include two veterinarians, four university faculty scientists, two animal caretakers and a non-scientist member of the St. Cloud community.

Usage of laboratory animals at St. Cloud State University is allowed only under protocols developed in accordance with AAALAC guidelines. Protocol forms are to be completed and submitted to and approved by the IACUC prior to any animal usage. As stated above, protocol forms are due in the Dean’s Office 10 days before the first Friday of each month. Following the completion of the approved animal usage, final report forms are to be submitted to the IACUC.
